There are limits to knowledge. Currently, at work, I’m researching and learning Drupal and in particular OpenPublish, a group of modules developed for Drupal. My mode for learning software is to install it, explore it, and bang on it. This can be frustrating at times, especially when the user interface and the help text is lacking. I find that more with Drupal than Wordpress. Maybe it is a familiarity issue.
Anyway, I quickly found myself feeling discouraged. My knowledge of Drupal and some of the modules, such as Views and Panels, is meager. This limitation is making learning OpenPublish harder.
Additionally, OpenPublish’s semantic capabilities, including tagging and it’s integration with OpenCalais is both fascinating and bewildering. I used to think that I understood the concepts of Taxonomies, Folksonomies and Vocabularies. After using OpenPublish, it is clear that I need to brush up and learn more.
I’m writing this post using Tagaroo for the first time. It is a WordPress plugin that uses the same principles found in OpenCalais. As you type, it examines your post for important phrases, then suggests tags for the post. It also searches for relevant images. So far, the images aren’t quite right, but it seems pretty cool overall. Here’s an example of one of those images:
